हेडलाइन्स टुडे में रेप विक्टिम और रेप सर्वाइवर पर महाभारत

शब्दों के लिए ऐसे लिया जाता है स्टैंड

दिल्ली में हुए सामुहिक दुष्कर्म के खिलाफ सभ्य समाज ने कड़ा प्रतिकार किया. न्यूज़ चैनलों ने लगातार खबरें दिखाकर दुष्कर्म के खिलाफ ऐसी जागरूकता फैलाई कि आंदोलन की लौ जल उठी.

हाँ ये जरूर है कि न्यूज़ चैनलों पर इस संदर्भ में कुछ गलतियाँ भी हुई, कुछ तमाशे हुए और कुछ विवाद भी. दरअसल सामुहिक दुष्कर्म के खिलाफ ऐसी व्यापक कवरेज पहले कभी भी नहीं हुई थी. इसलिए इसकी भाषा से लेकर विजुअल की सीमा के दायरे से भी चैनल अनभिज्ञ थे.

अपनी – अपनी नैतिकता और समझ के हिसाब से चैनलों ने इसकी कवरेज की और वैसी ही भाषा का इस्तेमाल किया. इसी संदर्भ में टीवी टुडे ग्रुप के चैनल हेडलाइन्स टुडे में भाषा और शब्दों को लेकर न्यूज़ रूम के अंदर काफी बहस और मेलबाजी हुई.

एक तरह से कह सकते हैं कि रेप विक्टिम और रेप सर्ववाईवर में से किस शब्द का प्रयोग किया जाए पर महाभारत हुई. ये महाभारत हेडलाइन्स टुडे की डिपुटी एग्जिक्यूटिव प्रोड्यूसर (एडिटोरियल) चांदनी अहलावत डबास और सीनियर एडिटर, एडिटोरियल वी.वी. पद्मंभा शर्मा (V V Padmanabha Sharma) के बीच हुई.

वैसे देखा जाए तो शब्दों को लेकर न्यूज़रूम में ऐसी बहस कम ही होती है. खासकर हिंदी न्यूज़ चैनलों में शब्दों को लेकर कोई जूनियर अपने सीनियर से एक स्टैंड के साथ ऐसी बहस करे, देखने में नहीं आया.

आजतक के संस्थापक संपादक एस.पी.सिंह के बारे में उन्हें जानने वाले लोग कहते हैं कि वे ऐसे ही शब्दों को लेकर बड़े सचेत रहते थे और सटीक शब्द की तलाश में खासी मेहनत करते थे और अपने अधीनस्थ लोगों की भी राय लेते थे.

बहरहाल हेडलाइन्स टुडे में जो रेप विक्टिम और रेप सर्ववाईवर को लेकर जो मेल का आदान – प्रदान हुआ, उसे यहाँ नीचे प्रकाशित कर रहे हैं. हालाँकि मीडिया खबर पर आंतरिक मेल आदि को हम जारी नहीं करते. लेकिन इस बार ऐसा करना जरूरी है ताकि न्यूज़ चैनलों में काम करने वाले दूसरे प्रोड्यूसर भी शब्दों को लेकर ऐसा ही स्टैंड लेने की हिम्मत अपने अंदर जगा सके. यदि ऐसा हो तो हिंदी न्यूज़ चैनल अपने गढे हुए चुनिंदा शब्दों के डिक्शनरी से निकलकर नयी डिक्शनरी बना पायेगा.

While we are all genuinely agitated over the gangrape, let us not lose our rationality and language.

There is no such thing as a survivor of rape, unless it remotely means to say the intended victim escaped from the clutches of the would-be rapist.

She is a victim, just as any woman subjected to rape will ever be a VICTIM.

Yes, a victim can SURVIVE the TRAUMA of rape.

But in the Delhi case the victim is literally, even, trying to survive.

I disagree with you- language is important- yesterday itself we had a woman who faced such an ordeal and had only one request of us- she did not want to be called a victim but a survivor

The definition and meaning of survivor carries more empowerment then the word victim. That is what a rape survivor needs after such a horrible experience. They need to feel empowered, safe, and in many cases lucky that they lived.

You did agree with me. I said language is important. Of course if a victim comes out in the open and wants to be called a survivor, so be it. No problem. As to the rest, solace, succour and counselling are more important than lessons on empowerment. We have thousands of two-penny activists espousing the cause of empowerment, though to what end probably even they do not know. But what I do know is that in India a convivial atmosphere that promotes mental healing of a victim does not exist because of intrusion into the victim’s privacy all sorts of campaigners. Has anyone asked what kind of counselling arrangements for the victim? What kind of sustainable health care system is in place once she, hopefully, returns home? What kind of a social network exists to help her to normalcy? What we need to be demanding, as responsible media, much above the clamour for heads to roll, is a responsive, accountable, sustainable support system for the victims. After all, how many victims are brave enough to break out of their shells? Does it mean the rest are cowards? No. The rest simply do not have the support system that helps them regain their confidence. A ‘’survivor’’ represents the unitary or the few, a strong reflection of an individual woman’s ability to fight the odds. A ‘’victim’’ represents the collective and a stronger reflection of the need to help them regain their confidence; to become a ‘’survivor’’. So, choose.

The question is should one move with the times and attempt to be politically correct or keep the arguments going in a circular fashion- ofcourse all the problems you mention are correct.

Infact even eveteasing is wrong- it’s sexual harrassment.

Rape victim and abla nari is old fashioned and cliche- rape survivor is empowering
